One of the common myths we hear is that firms hire a CEO because they want someone younger to replace an ageing CEO. Is this really true?
What our data suggests is that the average age of those who joined as CEO in 2024, is 53.3 years – very similar to the 53.9y average for the outgoing CEOs.
At least, age is not the main reason for a CEO change, even if it is stated as a reason for optics.
